It Sucks To Be: Damon Evans

The winner of the I.S.T.B award for the week ending July 4th, 2010 is the Athletic Director from the University of Georgia, Damon Evans.  Mr. Evans was arrested in Atlanta last week on DUI charges.

Evans was selected as the Athletic Director at UGA in 2003. He has served in the role for the past 7 years.

I realize this story is  regional at best and that most people outside of the Southeast don’t even know who Damon Evans is.  He is the first local winner of the award.

Mr. Evan’s arrest and subsequent resignation are of his own doing. To be fair, he has stated this publicly. He was not framed or set up and as a 40 year old man I am sure he is familiar with GA’s DUI  laws. In other words, he brought this on himself. He made a  stupid mistake. Stupid mistake may be an understatement.

There is more to this story. Evans reportedly tried to “talk his way out” of the charges by telling the officer he was the “UGA Athletic Director”. (The officer must have been a GA Tech fan…).  The entire police report is available online if you would like to read it.

During the arrest Mr. Evan’s “friend” – 28 yr old Courtney Fuhrmann told the police officer that “this whole matter will be erased because Evans is the UGA Athletic Director.”  Ms. Fuhrmann was also arrested for disorderly conduct by the officer.  Maybe she was mad that Damon still had her red panties stuffed between his legs… Just sayin…

Finally, as with every award winner – I have to ask myself WHY? This guy was on top of the world. Great job – well respected,  beautiful family. two degrees etc. etc. Who knows where his career could have led him? Very sad but a deserved “it sucks to be” to Damon Evans.
