Holiday Safety Tips

“It was the night before Christmas and all through the house, not a creature was stirring EXCEPT THE CROOK DOWNSTAIRS STEALING YOUR STUFF”.

As the Holiday season approaches the number of thefts here in the Unites States increases.  Add in a poor economy and you have the makings for a serious increase in crime. Listed below are some ideas I came up with that will help keep you and your valuables safe during the holidays.

1. Keep your house locked! Whether you are home or not, keep the house locked. If you run an errand, go next door or know you are going to be in the basement office for a few hours, keep your house or apartment locked. A burglar can break in – rob you and be out in less than one minute.

2. Keep your vehicles locked!  Your TomTom or Garman can be be jacked in less than 10 seconds. If possible, hide them in your glove box or under the seat.  Don’t leave your cell phone in the car either. As theives troll the mall parking lots they look for quick hits, not cars they have to search through.

3. Do not leave valuables or presents in your car. Take them in the house.  These items should not be left in the trunk either. How many vehicles are equipped with interior trunk releases nowadays?

4. If possible, park your vehicles in your garage and CLOSE THE GARAGE DOOR! Speaking of garages, don’t leave the garage door up, close it whether you are home or not.

5. As for all valuables keep presents put away.

6. If your home is equipped with an alarm system – use it. If at home use the “stay mode”. If you are not home use the “away mode”. Test the system at least once a month and make sure the alarm is loud and can be heard outside as well as inside.

7. Consider where you place valuable furniture or keepsakes or statues or figurines. The closer they are to a window the easier it is for the burgular to break the window grab the item and be gone.

8. Do not allow anyone you don’t know in your home. Never leave someone to work in your home unattended.

9. If you are going to be out of town over the holidays don’t announce it on Facebook or Twitter or advertise it by letting mail stack up in your mailbox or newspapers in your front yard.  Ask a trusted friend to pick up your mail and newspapers and to turn on a light in your home at night. You can also have your mail delivery stopped until you return home.

10. When shopping… Don’t carry more bags at one time than you can handle – doing so makes you an easy target for a purse snatcher or someone who wants the items you just purchased. Do not leave receipts in the bags, they can fall out or someone can pull them off – ID theft is a major concern during the holiday season.
